This is an amazing story about People Power, Filipinos who removed their dictator through non-violent protests. We across Fiji can learn and draw strength from this
In l986 unarmed Filipinos surprised the world by nonviolently overthrowing the brutal dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Marcos was known at the time as “the Hitler of Southeast Asia.”
The movement was called “people power,” demonstrating in an amazing way the power of active nonviolence, which is similar to the Gandhi freedom struggle in India and the civil rights movement in the United States.
Despite all the fraud, lies, intimidation and violence employed by the dictator Marcos, the people power brilliantly used nonviolent strategies of marches, vigils, petitions, trained poll watchers and an independent polling commission. They also setup “Prayer Tents” where people could go to rest and pray.
When Marcos tried to steal the election the country moved to the brink of civil war. But Cardinal Jaime Sin went on radio and called the country to prayer and nonviolent resistance, a true revolution of love. People, those who were able to, were called to come unarmed to support the resistance movement. He also asked the religious leaders to pray and fast for the country’s deliverance from tyranny.
The next morning Filipinos began arriving outside Camp Aguinaldo where the defecting soldiers had gathered. By noon there were 100,000 resisters; by 2:00 p.m., there were 250,000. Hundreds of thousands more arrived the next day.
The demonstrations involved civilians as well as several political, military and religious groups. The protests, fueled by the resistance and opposition from years of corrupt governance by Marcos, culminated with the departure of the dictator to the United States state of Hawaii. Oh what a day this will be for Fiji!
Marcos declared martial law in 1972, citing rising civil disobedience as justification. One of Bainimarama's reasons was that he would stop corrupt politicians, but as we all know and there is so much proof, Bainimarama has become even more corrupt than the government he had accused of corruption. In fact Bainimarama and Khaiyum, together with their thieving relatives and supporters, have become the most corrupt people in Fiji's history. Those of you who still argue, despite all the proof, that Bainimarama is not corrupt are either really stupid or you are part of the corruption.
Like Bainimarama and Khaiyum, Marcos:
The demonstrations were a great success and Marcos was forced to escape to Hawaii. This is why Bainimarama and Khaiyum are actively trying and praying that you all believe their evil lies and accept their 2013 Constitution.
Bainimarama and Khaiyum know that if you stand-up together and protest against them, then there is nothing that they can do about it, except be arrested and go to prison or implement their exit plan. This is why they have been actively attacking any person and small groups of people.
What our youth and community leaders and Chiefs need to do is organise and lead the people in non-violent protests against the tyranny in Fiji.
Remember, just as the RFMF goons with guns can intimidate and beat us, even more so, with God’s Word we can defeat our enemy, the evil Bainimarama and Khaiyum dictatorship.
