Over 125,000 people in the tourism sector lost their livelihoods because of COVID-19 with many across the country pushed into poverty. The tropical cyclones also devastated many homes leaving victims to seek help.
But after 14 years of corruption, lies and mismanagement the Bainimarama government could only offer very little, if at all.
Because the Bainimarama government is broke!
The best the broke Bainimarama government could do was to tell workers to use their own FNPF retirement savings! Over 60,000 FNPF members have zero balances with many struggling to make ends meet!
Assistance, however, for many of these families came from and continue to arrive from fellow citizens and foreign donors.
This post is a special thank you to Allen Lockington and Narayan Reddy [depicted in the cartoon] and to their gang of volunteers from Kava Place Parliament, and not forgetting the many other similar groups and individuals, who have been out and about organising, collecting and distributing assistance to fellow citizens in need.
From food packs to wheelchairs and school books, the Kava Place Parliament team has found willing donors ready to do their bit to help out in whatever way they can, big or small, it all helps.
So here’s a big VINAKA VAKALEVU to you all – volunteers and donors, you know who you are!! May the good Lord continue to bless you for your kindness towards our fellow citizens in their time of need.
Just imagine if you take a loaf of bread from a shop anywhere in the Pacific, but you tell the shop-keeper that you are not going to pay for the loaf of bread until they fix up their management! Yeah, you know exactly what the shop-keeper will tell you and probably do to you in response!
This scenario, writes Prof Wadan Narsey in his article “USP: the illusion of Government grants” (ed. in FT 24/10/2021), is exactly what is happening at The University of the South Pacific, the premier regional university,
The Fiji Government is a minority shareholder in USP. It isn't even the majority contributor to USP’s budget, even if the largest proportion of USP’s students are from Fiji. Yet the childish megalomaniac Fiji AG Sayed-Khaiyum acts like his corrupt Government is the major shareholder and contributor. Especially when he arrogantly tells the USP Council that Fiji is not going to pay its bill to USP until his “conditions” are met. This is blackmail!
What many may not know is that the corrupt Sayed-Khaiyum is not threatening to withhold a grant. Sayed-Khaiyum is actually refusing to pay USP for teaching Fiji Government sponsored students. This is just like you telling the shop-keeper you won't pay for the bread.
The USP Council would be perfectly entitled to sue the Fiji Government, says Prof Narsey, or inform the students to go elsewhere (after paying for what they have already received).
This is probably the best time for the USP Council to relocate its administration away from Sayed-Khaiyum's interfering childish temper tantrums in Fiji, to a more suitable location like Vanuatu.
